An Efficient Design and Implementation of DES and Triple-DES Algorithms

چکیده

In today’s world where data communications, distributed data processing, financial transactions, and multilevel sharing of data resources has become an important aspect of computer system and an integral part of day-to-day function, cryptography is the only way of ensuring data security. Currently there are 2 types of cryptographic systems: Symmetric and Asymmetric. This paper gives a general overview of symmetric cryptography. It also explains in great depth two most widely used symmetric algorithms, DES and Triple-DES – their advantages, disadvantages, hardware implementation details, resource utilization and achievable performance. The algorithm analysis and the optimizations used are described. Target technology, FPGA, is explained and coding considerations required to direct the synthesis tools to map the design to achieve optimum, high-speed implementation are described. Our implementation results are compared to the commercial implementation solutions.
